Comic Con 20 June 2019

Our first-ever Comic Con was on Thursday 20 June. This event was for our P7 pupils and their families, and for all in our school community. The library was the focus for the event, with the staffroom and conference room transformed into a cafe and Pop Up bookshop and a graphic art exhibition in the corridor on our green floor. Visitors began to arrive at 4.30pm  and continued until the event concluded at 6.30pm. There were many visitors and these included some very colourful ones, some famous ones and some unusual ones!

Activities on offer included face painting, a photo booth, Warhammer and Gaming tables, and the hugely popular Escape Room. It was called The Riddler’s Lair and was the brainchild of pupil library assistant Josh Hanover. He and his crew of Cameron Cruickshank and Tatiana Lasham ensured that all who queued for the Escape Room had a fabulous experience.

There was a colouring competition and a Marvel family quiz and winners Sam, Charlie and Kate, were announced by our MC for the evening, The Riddler. The winners were delighted with their prizes, which had kindly donated by Glasgow-based comic artists Metaphrog.

The family costume competition was very exciting and began with a parade on our catwalk. The Avengers family of Spiderman, Dr Strange, Captain Marvel and Ironspider, were all there. As were a variety of awesome superheroes and comic characters. The Riddler had a lot of thinking to do, before revealing his decision. The winners of our costume competition were new S1 parent Harley Quinn and her daughter, Violet Parr of the Incredibles. What an incredible effort for our Comic Con! Prizes for these winners were donated by Yeadon’s of Elgin.

Batman was very busy all evening, chatting to visitors and handing out prizes, before he zoomed off to the P7 parents’ evening in the hall.

For our Comic Con attendees, there was time for a rest, a read and a chat amongst friends, both in the library and in our themed cafe in the staffroom.  Miss Ainslie and her top team ensured a roaring trade with delicious refreshments and awesome Comic Con cupcakes.

This event was an epic event! There were happy faces as everyone left and sad ones too, that it was all over.

From the team behind our first-ever Comic Con – Mr Clark, Mrs Bodiam and Mrs Toonen – a huge thank you to all who visited and participated in the event.

Thanks to partners El-con, Waterstones Elgin and Yeadon’s of Elgin. A huge thank you to our school partners: our Art, Drama, Home Economics departments and to Mrs Forster in the English department and Miss Burrell, student History teacher.
