Grampian Children’s Book Awards Ceremony 8 May 2019

Some of our Novelties Book Group attended The Grampian Children’s Book Award ceremony in Aberdeen, on Wednesday 8 May, with Mrs Toonen. This award is for best fiction book, judged by pupils in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray. The pupils read the shortlisted books and voted for their favourite and were able to meet several authors. There were book signings, competitions and lively Q & A session.
We shared the Buckie High School minibus from Keith to Aberdeen and enjoyed meeting their group and chatting about books too.

Isla Edwards, one of our S2 Novelties Book Club pupils along with Buckie High pupils met authors Alan Gibbons, Ross Welford, Alex McCall and Adam Baron before the ceremony and enjoyed some author spotting. Isla also saw her book review on display.

S4 pupil Rhys Nelson’s poster of The Truth and Lies of Ella Black by Emily Barr was on display. We are so pleased for Rhys, as creating this beautiful poster was a labour of love!  Rhys was not with us at the ceremony as he was revising for his N5 English exam. Author Emily Barr got in touch with us to say:

“Rhys you superstar! Good luck with your exam tomorrow 🌟”

We have lots to tell him!

Isobella Strange in S4 should be so proud of her wonderful poster of The Extinction Trials by SM Wilson and the author herself contacted us to say: “That is the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen. Thank you Isobella!”

The winning author  of The Grampian Children’s Book Award 2019 was announced as The 1000 year Old Boy by Ross Welford! Congratulations to him from us all at Elgin Academy. We thought he was magic! Especially after performing some magic on stage. The 1000 Year Old Boy is currently one of the books in our S2 book talk programme 🎉

Vaughan enjoyed meeting the winner of this year’s award, Ross Welford and getting his copy of The 1,000 year old boy signed.

Huge congratulations to our prize winner Isobella Strange and well done to all our pupils who entered the competitions and took part in the award. They said: “We enjoyed a grand day out, meeting amazing authors, who were inspirational and we can’t wait for next year.”
