Nicola Morgan Moray Minds Mental Wellbeing Event 27 March 2019

Mental Wellbeing expert and well-known author Nicola Morgan was in school on Wednesday 27 March, to meet and work with our S3 Moray Minds Mental Health Ambassadors. Our keynote speaker has a rich knowledge of and understanding of stress, anxiety and other mental health issues for young people, along with a wealth of strategies to address them. https://www.nicolamorgan.com/

Mental Health Ambassadors from three other schools in Moray joined our pupils in this West Moray event – Elgin High School, Forres Academy and Lossiemouth High School – for a morning of collaborating, sharing and learning. The event began with a welcome from three of our Mental Health Ambassadors: Lily, Morgan & Emma, to peer @MindsMoray Ambassadors from the other schools.

Everyone focused and all eyes were on Nicola Morgan as she began her keynote talk.

There was so much to take away during this talk: relaxation is not a luxury or reward. It is so important to have daily relaxation. Just little things make a difference. Especially when approaching exams! 🔸Stroke a pet. 🔸Doodle/daydream/walk/music/…. Choose yours!

The keynote was followed by a breakout session and discussion in the multi-school groups: What they have achieved in schools; what they learned during the session with Nicola Morgan and what might happen next in their own school communities.

The Mental Health Ambassadors representing the four West Moray schools with Nicola Morgan:

A Huge thank you to Nicola Morgan.

We are very appreciative of Nicola Morgan’s time and contribution to this Mental Wellbeing event, which was described by Ambassadors, Sarah Fraser & Josh Hanover, as “inspirational and informative”.  There are now lots of ideas to share in school.

And, the icing on the cake of a day?

There was some great news for our Mental Health Ambassadors, from Marc Doherty, our Community Engagement Youth Worker. Josh Hanover & Hannah Reid, two of our Ambassadors, pitched their ideas to Elgin North YP Decide and have been successful in receiving funding to take their ideas forward.

The Moray Minds project has been developed by Moray School Librarians, together with partners from NHS Grampian and Moray Council Engagement Team and aims to continue to improve support for young people in Moray, by giving access to resources and strategies around managing stress and anxiety. The project will continue to create opportunities for young people to develop as Mental Health and to exercise leadership and creativity in raising awareness of mental wellbeing issues in school.
