S1 Book Talks – Classics – January 2019

S1 pupils begin the New Year with classic novels during their book talks.

These will be during the week 14 January.

So what makes a classic? It can’t just be that it’s old! A classic must have something else, something that has caused it to endure. While parts of any book may date, there must be something about a true classic that remains relevant to young people and adults alike, across the generations.

Ultimately, the books should be read, and re-read, by young adults. What unites both old, modern and future classics is their ability to deal with larger themes, involving eternal truths.

We have these books highlighted this month (and lots more on display and on the shelves) which should be both enjoyable to read and which have themes which appeal to our S1s.
