S2 Classes and Holocaust Memorial Day Book Talks with S6 Auschwitz Ambassadors 31 January 2019

Our S2 Library book talks for January began on Monday 21 January and continued until Friday 31 January and were all about sharing the Once series of books by Morris Gleitzman and remembering the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Our S6 Auschwitz Ambassadors Tyra More and Bethan Roberts came into school from study leave to participate in the S2 book talks and to share what they have learned from their visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland with all seven S2 classes. A huge thank you to them, They were both brilliant!

Liam, Cameron and Claudia in class 2.6 all borrowed the Once series of books by Morris Gleitzman and want to know more about Felix’s journey #happylibrarian #happyreaders #GreatReads.

Thursday 31 January was also the final time with Bethan, one of our S6 Auschwitz Ambassadors in our book talks this month.  The Srebrenica genocide is the largest incidence of mass-murder in Europe since WW2 . Claudia in class 2.6 has visited Bosnia and shared memories of her visit with us.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27 January each year. It’s a time for everyone to pause to remember the millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. On HMD we can honour the survivors of these regimes and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to inform our lives today. 27 January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. HMD 2019 will include marking the 25th anniversary of the Genocide in Rwanda, which began in April 1994 and the 40th anniversary of the end of the Genocide in Cambodia, which ended in 1979.
