Scottish Teenage Book Prize ’17 – 1st Prize Nicole Watt!

Spectacular Successes

S3 pupils, with Joanne Havinden and Shelagh Toonen, have been shadowing the Scottish Teen Book Prize 2017 Award. This has involved personal reading, class work and library sessions, all focused on the three shortlisted books and participation in two competitions. Elgin Academy has performed incredibly well this year, with the panel of judges commenting on a continuing high standard from Elgin Academy.

Winner of the Graphic Novel competition is Nicole Watt and 3rd place goes to Morven Ross. In the Book Trailer competition, two groups of pupils are highly commended and these are, in one group: Eilidh Angus, Nicole Watt, Connor Muir and in the other group: Fing Phannich, Jamie Richards and Ibrahim Beg.

Huge congratulations to them on fantastic achievements in this national award and their entries have been published on the Scottish Book Trust website: www.scottishbooktrust.com today. Well done to all pupils who participated in this year’s award.

The judges further commented: “ It is going to look a little weird on our site having so much from one school, but the fact was that these were extremely strong entries! In the case of the book trailer competition, we seem to get a very high standard from Elgin every year, and obviously the graphic novel competition is in its first year, so we look forward to seeing more from the school in the future hopefully!”

Elgin Academy’s engagement with The Scottish Teen Book Prize Award will feature in more depth, as we have been asked to write blogs about our experience shadowing the award. The judges felt that the competition entries showed a very strong understanding of how each medium worked and that there was lots of effective teaching and learning going on!

We are all delighted for our pupils and their successes are well deserved.
