Books for young Feminists

Elgin Academy Fiction for Young Feminists

Feisty girls overcoming great odds, as chosen by author Maggi Gibson

The books on this list are all books I’ve read myself and totally loved. Some feature girls who are wonderfully feisty, even though at times they might be wrong-headed. In others, the girl is going through an incredibly hard time, and the problems life throws are almost enough to break them. All of them are books I wish I’d had the chance to read in my early teens.

    • Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
    • Gingerbread by Rachel Cohn
    • How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
    • I Wouldn’t Thank You for a Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy
    • Jinx by Margaret Wild
    • Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
    • I’m Alice, I Think by Susan Juby
    • The Bride’s Farewell by Meg Rosoff
