Catriona Yule October 2012

Advanced Higher students were introduced to famous poet Catriona Yule on Thursday the 4th of October – National Poetry Day. The poet made a visit to Elgin Academy to lead a workshop with the pupils as part of this year’s poetry day theme: stars.

The star herself provided the pupils with tasks which included reading random sentences then writing down the connotations that spring to mind. This was in preparation for the next task: to look at magazine rip-outs of models then examine song lyrics associated with stars and combining a description of the model, the students fused them into the situation of the song to create a unique and original poem.

The students were praised by Yule who proclaimed they were the next stars of poetry.  Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and took Yule’s advice and comments out with the class-room to pursue their own poetry ambitions.
