Gill Arbuthnott in EA!

Dracula Detectives – Fangs for the Fun!

We were delighted to welcome author and science writer Gill Arbuthnott to school on Wednesday 15 November.

She worked with all of S1 in the library during three exciting and innovative workshops.

In fun and interactive sessions, pupils discovered how infectious diseases are spread, using the scenario of an outbreak of vampirism in a village.

“Is she a famous scientist” and “Ooh this is awesome”: some of the reactions from S1 pupils during our visit from author & scientist Gill Arbuthnott. Fear has come to the village & we have an outbreak of vampirism! Count Dracula was among us & infecting everyone whose blood he sucks. Yikes! Who were the vampires amongst us? These were Seriously Scary Science workshops with author Gill Arbuthnott in the library.

In one of the sessions, demonstrating that our library welcomes all visitors, we met the real Count, Dracula! He enjoyed meeting and working with the pupils and we saw that the Count always has time for a spot of reading. Especially when the book is about himself! Fangs for popping in, to meet our visiting author, Gill Arbuthnott. We had a great day – made possible by Scottish Book Trust’s Live Literature Funding scheme.

This event followed on from successful library book talks and sessions on Germ Wars and Scientists, and was a successful collaborative learning project between the library and the science departments which focused on literacy and STEM subjects.
